6-3: M1s vs Dundee Wanderers (Premiership) - 13/11/21
On a cold Saturday night Western Lettings Hillhead welcomed Dundee Wanderers for a late start under the lights at Old Anniesland. Both teams were on the hunt for points following a shaky start to their respective campaigns.
The home side found their groove early on, with the visitors sitting off on a half-court press. Hillhead’s press, which had been freshly drilled into the team, found joy with a good steal of the ball leading to a quick breakaway which saw the home captain Fraser Ward put the men in black one up. Hillhead kept the pressure up, having multiple entries to the visitor’s circle which eventually bore fruit with Jimmy Lynch Small finally opening his Premiership goal tally with one of the easiest back post tap-ins he’ll have in his career.
After getting a taste for goals he soon found a second after jumping on the rebound from a powerful strike from Fraser Ward putting the Glasgow side 3-0 ahead.
The game began to take a scrappy turn with multiple players from both sides taking a rest in the sin-bin. A lapse in concentration left Wanderers with a 3 man break against the Hillhead keeper, Ewan Campbell. The first attempt was well shut down but unfortunately, the clearance made it as far as the second Dundee attacker who flicked the ball into an empty net after Hillhead had been caught napping.
The cards kept coming with Andrew Black taking a yellow for an unknown amount of time. Hillhead did find joy with a clinical short corner from Fraser Ward adding a second to his tally. The home side found the back of the net again with a beautiful deflection by Murray Ross from a link-up with Cameron Butler in a move straight off the training ground. The defender, who has cemented himself as one of Hillhead’s most consistent and reliable players, almost created another goal with a similar dangerous pass to Jimmy Lynch Small who was on the hunt for his hat-trick but sent his close-range effort straight into the keeper’s pads.
The final quarter is one the home side will want to put behind them as the game devolved into a scrappy running game with little sustained possession. The visitors got a goal back when an attacker found himself unmarked in the D and slotted the ball in the bottom corner. The game continued to be an ugly one with cards for Murray Ross, Dom Slawson and Andrew Duke all finding themselves spending a spell in the umpire’s bad books.
Hillhead extended their lead with a penalty stroke from the captain Fraser Ward completing his hat-trick. Dundee found themselves getting more joy as the home side lost their focus and had a succession of short corners which finally found the back of the net with the last play of the game.
Periods of very nice hockey from Hillhead but lapses in concentration and game management kept them from pushing their goal tally higher. Keith Joss’ side will have plenty to take from the game in preparation for their visit to Titwood to play Clydesdale next week.
