0-6: M1s vs Western Wildcats (Scottish Cup Final) - 14/05/22
The fairytale had to come to an end sometime. However, I think we can all look back on the experience with a smile on our faces.
Western Lettings Hillhead had earned their place in the final with a thrilling cup run. Seeing off Uddingston on penalty strokes after a 1-1 draw, then comfortably dispatching Glasgow University 7-2 before snatching a late 3-2 victory against Edinburgh University in the semi finals a few weeks ago.
Western Wildcats had made light work of their opponents on their way to the final. A 5-0 walkover against Dundee Wanderers, a 4-2 win against Grange who were their closest challengers in the league, and then 8-0 against Dunfermline Carnegie.
The Hillhead supporters were determined to make the most of the day and if there was an award for the best crowd of the weekend then they certainly would have won it. It was great to see so many family and friends, as well as current and former members, make the journey to Peffermill. Between the songs, the smokebombs, the mascots, and the cheering - it was truly special and dwarfed that of the opposition. Rumour has it our Futures boys had to be moved by the TV folk as they were making too much noise!
Hillhead started strong and won the coin toss, electing to take push back. However, to be honest, after that Western Wildcats dominated possession and the majority of the scoring chances. Hillhead battled hard and they were rewarded with a few corners and open play shots, however, Gavin Somerville was in top form and he would not be beaten on the day. The third quarter was Hillhead’s brightest, Matt Carder had perhaps the best chance of the day for Hillhead but unfortunately was denied by the base of the post.
Hillhead’s goalkeeper Ewan Campbell was substituted with a few minutes remaining, ensuring that he got the dedicated applause he had most certainly earned. Iestyn’s welcome to the game would be a 1 v 1 with Johnny Christie, the young goalkeeper’s pressure was enough to see the Western forward fail to complete the final pass.
While the result was not what we had wanted at the start of the day, credit must go to Western Wildcats for their unbeaten season across indoor and outdoor leagues. We’ll be back next season to try again!
