District Cup Final Preview - 6th May 2023
Hillhead Men’s 2s play in the Scottish District Cup Final this Saturday 6th May at Glasgow National Hockey Centre. This marks the culmination of a very special season for Hillhead’s not so ‘young pretenders’ having won Regional League 1 in the weeks prior with an undefeated season, amassing 42 points from the 48 available. This appearance in the final represents a first for the club as a 2nd XI at cup level having enjoyed successes in plate finals over the years. It is a wonderful opportunity to build on the feel-good factor from last season’s Scottish Cup Final which featured our 1st XI. If Hillhead were to triumph on the day they would become the first ever Senior men’s team at the club to win a National Cup and therefore go through the season undefeated. Sounds good eh? But this is far from a formality.
Round of 16
Hillhead played Glasgow University 2s away in the last 16 and prevailed 18-1, which in all honestly flattered the students who were afflicted by too much alcohol and apathy on the day. Mention to Murray McVicar for his 9 goals.
Quarter Finals
Next up were Clydesdale 2s at home, a team that were going to provide a much sterner test of Hillhead’s cup credentials. After a strong performance against a very strong Dale side, Hillhead were worthy winners 5-3.
Semi Finals
With the Easter holidays upon us and memories of last year’s disappointing defeat to Western at the same stage of the competition last season, a trip to Peffermill to play Edinburgh Uni 2s was as diffciult a tie as imaginable, given they were top of Regional League and were getting to play at their home pitch despite it being a neutral venue. A cagey affair ensued with little to separate the sides. Hillhead evntually showed their superiority prevailing 3-2. A fantastic win against last year’s Cup winners and bookie’s favourites.
Final
Hillhead face a young and dynamic Western Wildcats side in the Cup final. The two sides met in the league with Hillhead winning the away leg 5-3 and Wildcats clawing their way to a 3-3 draw when hosted by Hillhead. These scorelines accurately reflect how closely contested this showcase match will be. Will Hillhead’s experience be too much for the young, dynamic Wildcats? To find out get yourself along to Glasgow Green to cheer the lads on.
